Subject:                          RIBI Service News - March 2014

Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland

Welcome to the March Service News, linking you to news, resources and information from all of RIBI's Service Committees. It is emailed, monthly, to all 37,000+ members, and honorary members, whose email addresses are on the RI database. If Club Secretaries are aware of members with an email address, but not on the RI database, please forward to them (and add their details to the database). Service News editions are archived on the RIBI website, in the Updates area.

If you cannot read this email properly (due to your email settings), click on this link and a web page showing the email as intended will open.

Our April Newsletter can be found on the website here.

The Woodland Trust has announced their Autumn Planting programme. Over 4000 packs of trees FREE for Schools, Communities and Groups are now available on application for planting in November 2014.  Applications should be made through their web site NO LATER THAN 4th SEPTEMBER but preferably as soon as possible. Trees can be obtained in packs of 30 for a copse, 105 or 420. What about a copse to commemorate the First World War?

The Sustainability Trust founded and run by Rotarians is worth further investigation. They have several very worthwhile environmental projects which they undertake all over the world, and provide a useful source if you are looking for something to support abroad.

Proposed Environmental Resolution for the RI Council of Legislation has been widely circulated to District Governors. As well as adopting it in your own District, would anyone, with Rotary contacts abroad, try and get them to support and endorse the Resolution as it will carry much more weight then something coming just from RIBI?

Now is a good time to organise a Spring Clean before grass and weeds start to grow. Involve other organisations, schools and youth groups if you can. Just picking up litter yourself helps.

We are pleased to announce that we will be launching the public facing pages of our new website in April. The new website has the same look and feel as the RI website and has been designed to be easier to navigate.

We are still in the process of liaising with the various committees regarding the content of the members area, which is much more complex. Therefore, in order to make sure all pages are up to date, the members area will be launching in the new Rotary year. In the meantime, the existing members area will still be available as usual.

Changing Clubs
I am still receiving stories from clubs that have successfully changed structure, activities, or even club culture and have, as a result, increased their membership. Please continue to let me have your tips on how to make clubs more engaging, fun and vibrant. Send your stories to: davidhoughton955@btinternet.com

Big Bang
What a great event and a really successful initiative to link Youth Service with Membership Development opportunities. Thank you to Donna and her team. Your club may well receive interest from those who attended the event, especially with the knowledge gained of what Rotary can offer young people in our service to our communities. Please let me know if you have enquiries so that we can capture the benefits accrued from this event.

Webinars 2014
The next webinar will take place on Thursday 24th April from 19.00 to 20.00. Please note the change of date from that originally published. We will look at a Step by Step Guide to Innovative and Flexible Rotary. Please register using this link. Should you wish to feature other subjects in our webinar programme, please let me know - davidhoughton955@btinternet.com

District Restructuring
Full details of an Update and Report to the General Council in February 2014 can be found on the RIBI website as part of the General Council Meeting Minutes. Summary details of the district consultation at the end of last year have now been published and can be found here also.

Rotarians, please forward this to any Rotaract club your club sponsors as Service News can’t go to them direct. The latest news from the Rotaract Committee can be found here on the RIBI website.

RIBI Conference
Firstly, a big thank you for the 2 responses, (yes, just 2) to last month’s plea for help with manning the Rotaract stand in the Rotary Showcase due mainly to the concurrent running of the New Generations breakout on Saturday afternoon. Colin Sullivan (D1180) isn’t attending the conference but was prepared to give up his whole Saturday to support Rotaract even though he has never previously been involved. Truly Service Above Self. Thanks also to Peter Stone on behalf of the Rotary Club of Lichfield for their offer of help. Very much appreciated at a time when we need to more actively support Rotaract, some of the future custodians of Rotary in RIBI.

Training Seminar - 17th May 2014
A date for the diaries of all District Rotaract Chairs (DRC) and District Rotaract Representatives (DRR). A not to be missed interactive workshop day at Alcester – the closest we can get to an RIBI Assembly type event. Call notices will go out soon but your attendance is vital to help Rotaract grow.

New Rotaract in Great Britain & Ireland (RGBI) website
The RGBI team has worked hard over the last year to revitalise its image and provide a website that can help development membership in these isles, whilst also providing useful resources to both Rotary and Rotaract members. Please do take a moment to view it here: www.rotaract.org.uk

Action: Club Secretary
Electing New Member – 7 day letter

As a result of numerous requests from club secretaries for a copy of the 7-day letter, we have created an example of a very simple 7-day letter that clubs can use. We have compiled the example from a cross section of 7-day letters currently used by clubs, and hope that club secretaries will find this example document useful. Click here to download the 7-day letter which is available in Word format.
